Xiaomi tops Indian market in Q3 2018 according to Counterpoint Research

The 2018 third-quarter report on smartphone shipments to India has been released by Counterpoint Research. According to the report, Xiaomi took the lead with 27% market share, which is followed by Samsung who holds a 23% and Vivo with 10%.

The Counterpoint report also shows that Micromax comes fourth with 9% market share (which is a surprise appearance). The top 5 list is completed with Oppo who has an 8% market share. The report covers the months of July to September.

A total shipment increase of 24% was also recorded against the previous quarter, and 5% on a yearly basis. Karn Chauhan, who is a research analyst at Counterpoint revealed that the figures are surprising as India surpassed the United States in terms of shipments. The number of users in India exceeded 400 million, making the Asian country the second biggest smartphone market in the world, following China.

The report further shows that nearly a third of the devices shipped within the period under review cost between $150 and $250, while the Pocophone F1 (known in India also as Poco F1) arrival helped Xiaomi reinforce its lead in India. In other to enforce their authority in the Indian market, Samsung unveiled more J-series smartphones, including the Galaxy J6 and the Galaxy J8. There is also the Galaxy J2 Core that boots Android Go.

In the case of Micromax appearing in the Indian market, the reason is simple. The Indian company won a contract with the state government of Chhattisgarh, India. The manufacturer, along with the carrier Reliance Jio, distributed over 5 million smartphones to women and students in an ambitious plan to make the citizens more connected.
